Judge orders recount in fourth ward Council race

Judge orders recount

June 26, 2007 JJ

HOBOKEN - A Hudson County judge has ordered a full recount of the votes from the 4th Ward runoff election that saw challenger Dawn Zimmer narrowly beat incumbent Hoboken City Councilman Christopher Campos.

State Superior Court Judge Maurice Gallipoli set the date for the full recount for tomorrow afternoon, officials said.

Hudson County election officials, the Hoboken City clerk and Zimmer were served Friday after Campos' attorneys at Brownstein Booth & Associates filed for a recount.

Campos lost to Zimmer by six votes - 892 to 886, including absentee and provisional ballots.

Board of Elections clerk Michael Harper said he is confident that the recount will confirm the results.

If the outcome does not change, Campos may then challenge votes that he says should not have been counted.

"Based on what we have seen so far, we will definitely challenge the recount," attorney Alexander Booth said.

Zimmer maintains that the 145 absentee ballots she received in the runoff were valid. Campos received 50 absentee votes.

"Chris has the right to a recount," Zimmer said. "This is just part of the legal process. I am completely confident that the recount results will confirm my election on June 12."
