Applied Companies: BARRY IS BARRED FROM WORKING AS ATTORNEY

BARRY IS BARRED FROM WORKING AS ATTORNEY
The Jersey Journal, Jun. 23, 2005

A Hoboken developer and attorney convicted of passing bribes to former Hudson County Executive Robert Janiszewski was disbarred this week by the state's Office of Attorney Ethics.

Joseph Barry, already serving a 25-month prison term, voluntarily consented to disbarment last month, according to court records.

Barry is the former president of Hoboken-based Applied Development. He pleaded guilty last year to giving Janiszewski nearly $115,000 in payoffs to obtain government contracts.

The disbarment document issued by the Office of Attorney Ethics -- a division of the state's Supreme Court -- orders Barry's name to be "stricken from the roll of attorneys and that he be permanently restrained and enjoined from practicing law."

Janiszewski -- a four-term county executive -- admitted to extorting "more than "$100,000" from Barry and other contractors as part of his plea agreement and began serving a 41-month sentence last month. For nearly a year, Janiszewski cooperated with government investigators to obtain evidence against Barry and others he had shaken down or who had been participants in his schemes.
