LaBruno to step down in wake of SWAT scandal

March 07, 2008 Jersey Journal

Police Chief Carmen LaBruno will announce his retirement next week in the wake of the department's SWAT team scandal, city sources said tonight.

LaBruno, 59, is expected to make a formal declaration ending his 37-year law enforcement career sometime next week, according to sources.

The chief is expected to stay during a transition period that would end in June.City officials will welcome a clean break with LaBruno rather than entering into litigation that could last several years, according to sources close to talks between the city and the police chief.

One of the problems in negotiations with LaBruno, sources say, was that the city has a contract with the chief and it must be determined how much leave time will be owed.
