Fair Share Housing Center has filed a suit charging the Zoning Board and Advance at Hoboken LLC, the developer of a planned 140-unit housing development at 1300 Willow St., with failing to comply with fair housing regulations.

The center, which was created in 1975 to ensure fair housing in New Jersey, filed suit challenging the approval and seeking compliance with Hoboken’s ordinance on housing for lower-income households.

The suit was filed in Hudson County Superior Court on July 6.

Fair Share Housing Center Associate Director Kevin Walsh said 10 percent of new housing in the city is required to be available for lower-income families, but the rule is not being enforced in new developments.

The Zoning Board of Adjustment’s approval of the construction of a 12-story residential building on 509 Newark St., in Hoboken was rebuffed by the City Council on Wednesday night. The City Council appealed the Zoning Board’s granting of five D-type (or, the most severe) variances regarding the building’s size at the special meeting in City Hall.

Fourth Ward Councilman Michael Lenz motioned and Councilman-at-Large Ravi Bhalla seconded a rejection of the height and bulk variances on the grounds that it was completely unsupported. All variances regarding the size and intended use of the property were overturned.

State Police grab documents in Arezzo probe

The Jersey Journal's Jarrett Renshaw is reporting that State Troopers from the Organized Crime Unit went to City Hall yesterday and seized documents from Construction Code Official Al Arezzo's office.

In addition, sources have told Renshaw that a grand jury has been convened in connection with the probe.
