Hoboken city official responds to rumors on local blog

There are rumors floating around City Hall again – and this time the FBI is involved.

Local blog Hoboken411.com posted information this morning that allege Mayor Zimmer is trying to hide information contained in email correspondence from two aides, Juan Melli and Dan Bryan.

There are allegations that the Zimmer aides used their positions in the office to direct Zimmer’s political activities with the press and other local blogs.

“A massive email dump was underway to hide evidence of wrongdoing,” said the bloggers.

Hudson County freeholders give contract for running 911 emergency system to Monmouth County firm; current service provider Jersey City Medical Center predicts lives will be put at risk

The Hudson County Board of Freeholders last night unanimously awarded a one-year, $160,000 contract to a Monmouth County firm to handle the county's 911 emergency system.

The vote came despite objections from the current service provider, Jersey City Medical Center, which submitted a $400,000 bid for the coming year.

Citing costs, the freeholders rejected JCMC's bid in favor of Monmouth-Ocean Hospital Service Corp.

City-owned Hoboken University Medical Center is listed for sale by principals "HUMC Holdco LLC" as "financing option" to afford hospital improvements

The city-owned Hoboken University Medical Center's land and building is for sale for $90 million, a real estate firm confirmed yesterday.

Manhattan-based Grubb & Ellis has the hospital listed as a "long term sale leaseback," meaning that the property and building would be sold and leased back to the business that is operating there: the hospital.

A representative from Grubb & Ellis would not divulge who listed it with them, although the listing says it is being sold by a private group.

Hoboken Police Union appeals 9 Hoboken police demotions to the state

Ken Ferrante left work at the Hoboken Police Department on Friday a lieutenant and returned today a sergeant.

"It feels awkward," said Ferrante who was formerly a commander of three community policing bureaus and is now a first line supervisor over one four-member unit.

Ferrante is one of nine senior officers who have been demoted effective today as part of Mayor Dawn Zimmer's police redeployment plan that she has said will save taxpayers on the city's high personnel costs.

The city recently reported over $2 million in savings through the plan.

In response, the PSOA - the senior police officers' union - is appealing the decision.

Why are Hoboken 4th Ward ballots on the desk of the state Attorney General?

Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio has asked the office of the state attorney general to step in on the case of alleged fourth ward election fraud, but his reasons for doing so have as much to do with politics as usual in Hoboken as they do the ballots themselves.

"These cases are very difficult because people have their own political motivations," DeFazio said in a phone interview earlier this afternoon.

Last week, the county Board of Elections moved 190 mail-in ballots and four criminal referrals to DeFazio's desk in response to challenges made by the campaign of Mike Lenz, the incumbent who was defeated by Tim Occhipinti in the Nov. 2 election.

Developer files lawsuit saying Hoboken improperly claimed it breached contract for sale of municipal garage, and that it was ready to pay price agreed upon

In August, the [Hoboken] City Council voted to kill the sale of the municipal garage on Observer Highway to S. Hekemian Group, stating the developer was in breach of contract for attempting to lower the price.

But now the developer says it was actually prepared to buy the property for the original $25.5 million.

SHG is also accusing the city of having "engaged in a charade," said the developer's attorney Doug Cohen.

"Their allegation that we were in breach was really a pretext to the fact that they were in breach," said Cohen. "They tried to fire the first shot."

Combating crime around Hoboken's 2nd Street Light Rail

About 20 people attended Wednesday night's crime prevention meeting concerning several muggings and aggravated assaults that have occurred near Hoboken's 2nd Street Light Rail stop and around 2nd and Harrison streets.

Here's a summary from the Hoboken Police about that area, which they've determined a "hot spot," and (starting tonight!) what they'll be doing to prevent crime near the 2nd Street Light Rail:

Since Oct 12, 2008, there have been eight incidents of violent crime - meaning robberies and aggravated assaults -- in that area, said Sgt. Ken Ferrante, Commander of Hoboken Community Policing.

Anti-crime meeting tonight in Hoboken

According to Lt. Ken Ferrante, Commander of Hoboken Community Policing, there will be a meeting tonight at police headquarters to address crime around the 2nd Street Light Rail station.

The meeting was organized by a Hoboken resident who felt concerned about crime in the area of 2nd and Harrison streets, particularly on Friday nights. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. inside police headquarters. The room can only accommodate about 10-15 people, so the meeting is specifically for people who live near the Light Rail stop.

Ferrante said crime and crime-prevention solutions will be discussed tonight.

Lenz is fired as Hoboken's chief financial officer

HOBOKEN - Michael Lenz has been fired as the city's chief financial officer, just eight months after he was hired, it was announced yesterday.

The Election Day announcement came in a one-sentence press release from Mayor David Roberts. He said Lenz "has been discharged.based on the outcome of an internal investigation supervised by the Corporation Counsel with the assistance of the city's independent auditors."

Roberts had ordered the investigation last month after the City Council approved an emergency appropriation of $1.3 million. Roberts said he feared the administration had been misled about its financial situation, although he didn't name anyone he thought might be responsible.
